ORION Webinar Series

The ORION Project invites researchers, energy operators, policymakers, academics, innovators, and all curious minds to explore how digital twins, AI, and interoperable data solutions are powering the clean energy transition.

Experts from across the ORION project will share early project insights and engage in open discussion, making this your best opportunity to connect directly with leading professionals at the cutting edge of digital twins and renewable energy.

Each session runs 60 minutes: 45 minutes of presentations and discussion, followed by 15 minutes of live Q&A

This webinar series is an official Sustainable Energy Days event, held as part of EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2026. Sustainable Energy Days are community-led events organised across Europe each spring to raise awareness and drive action on the clean energy transition — bringing together innovators, policymakers, researchers, and citizens around a shared vision for a sustainable energy future. EUSEW is Europe’s largest event dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency, hosted annually by the European Commission.

Webinar #1 — 1 June 2026 · 15:00–16:00 CET

Digital Twins for Renewable Energy Operations

This opening session introduces ORION’s vision for human-centric Digital Twins in the clean energy transition. Discover how digital twins are moving beyond visualisation to become practical decision-support tools — combining real operational data, simulation, and interactive interfaces to improve planning, maintenance, and stakeholder understanding across renewable energy sectors.

Speakers:

  • Scott Young (AUGM) — Digital Twin concepts and how interactive platforms support better decision-making
  • Maria Inês Marques (EDP) — Operational insights from real-world PV plant integration
  • Andreas Amundsen (SUAS) — Lessons from the Ålesund port-city decarbonisation journey
  • Prof. Juan M. Escaño (University of Seville) — Partner representative from the INTEREST project

Webinar #2 — 8 June 2026 · 15:00–16:00 CET

AI, Sensors and Predictive Maintenance in Renewable Assets

This session explores how AI, SCADA analytics, advanced sensor technologies, and predictive maintenance are improving the reliability and cost-effectiveness of renewable energy assets. Featuring real operational challenges from solar and wave energy systems, speakers will demonstrate how ORION is building practical tools for earlier fault detection, asset-health monitoring, and maintenance decision support.

Speakers:

  • Tatiana Guedes (INESC TEC) — Turning asset data into maintenance intelligence
  • Anja Diez (SINTEF) — Advanced sensing for offshore renewable structures
  • Miguel Paixão Mendes (EDP) — Real-world O&M challenges in operating solar parks
  • David Volk (SIGMA) — Offshore wave energy: demonstrating condition monitoring in practice
  • Dr. Benjamin Adrian(ITWM- partner in the INTEREST sister project) — Predicting Remaining Useful Life Under Variable Load Profiles and Maintenance Activities

Webinar #3 — 15 June 2026 · 15:00–16:00 CET

From Ports to Power Systems: International ORION Use Cases

ORION’s methods are being applied across very different energy contexts. This session highlights the transferability of digital twins and data-driven tools across geographies, regulatory frameworks, and operational realities, showcasing how the same approaches can support port decarbonisation, shore-power planning, and power-system simulation in diverse settings.

Speakers:

  • Andreas Amundsen (SUAS) — Shore power planning in a Norwegian port city
  • Henrique Évora (UTA) — Island energy challenges in Cape Verde
  • Rodrigo Glória (UFRJ) — Power grid digitalisation in Brazil
  • Filipe Tadeu (INESC TEC)

Webinar #4 — 22 June 2026 · 15:30–16:30 CET

Collaboration for Impact: Interoperability, Standards and Policy Pathways

This webinar focuses on the foundations needed to make renewable energy digital twins scalable and replicable beyond individual pilots. Speakers will explain how interoperable data models, executable component models, optimisation tools, and standardisation pathways can move digital solutions from isolated experiments to widely adoptable approaches — and what policy and regulatory enablers are needed to support this transition.

Speakers:

  • Fengshuo Hao (RWTH) — Data models, interoperability architectures, and open adoption
  • Hossam Afifi (IMT) — Standards, regulation, and tools for local energy planning
